Pretoria Sailing Club (PSC) is situated on the Rietvlei Dam, in the Irene area of Pretoria, in the Gauteng Province of South Africa. Rietvlei Dam forms part of the Rietvlei Nature Reserve, which is strictly controlled by the Pretoria City Council.

Pretoria Sailing Club was founded in 1959 and has become one of the largest dinghy sailing clubs in Southern Africa (largest dinghy club on the Highveld). New members are "most welcome", according to the Pretoria Sailing Club website.

PSC burgeePretoria Sailing Club caters for a large number of sailing dinghy classes, ranging from the Optimist and Dabchick (for juniors) to the International Flying Dutchman (for speed freaks). Unfortunately only mono-hull dinghies are allowed.

The club has a full season of racing for all ages. Racing takes place on Saturdays and Sundays throughout the sailing season, which starts in August ends in May. Various levels of racing skills are catered for, with relaxed Saturday series races and the more serious monthly club championships.

If relaxing and cruising is more your type of sailing, Pretoria Sailing Club is also for you. The Rietvlei nature reserve has a rich bird-life and you might just see the odd rhino drinking at the water's edge! Pretoria Sailing Club has a no-race day once a month, and no racing takes place during the December holidays. Pretoria Sailing Club members have access to the dam all year round.

No powerboats are allowed at Pretoria Sailing Club - not because the folks at Pretoria Sailing Club are sailing snobs, but because the Rietvlei Dam is situated in the Rietvlei Nature Reserve, where no motor boating is allowed.

Pretoria Sailing Club has a large club building with galley facilities, ablution facilities, a play area for small children, spacious lawns ,shady trees, etc. A limited number of covered boat parking is available and there are concrete launching slip ways. Overnight camping on the Club grounds is permitted at certain regattas. The club offers an active social programme throughout the season.

Pretoria Sailing Club offers regularl sail training courses for adult and junior members, from beginner level through advanced. The club does have a fleet of Gypsies, Lasers, O9-ers and Optimists for rent to members at a very reasonable price.

To get to Pretoria Sailing Club, take the Irene / Rietvlei exit (Nelmapius Drive) from the R21 freeway between Pretoria and Kempton Park. Drive another 600 m after the old Pretoria / Kempton Park main road intersection, then turn right at the Rietvlei Nature Reserve / Waterworks main gate.

Yes, Pretoria Sailing Club does have a small pub.

Pretoria Sailing Club snail mail goes to P.O. Box 4610, Rietvalleirand, 0174, Gauteng, South Africa.

Captain_No_Beard

He has no beard, or is that because he is a girl?

He laughs in the face of fear, or is it just a nervous giggle?

He's a man with a plan, or is he hopelessly adrift at sea?

He knows absolutely nothing about sailing, or does he know absolutely nothing about web sites?

You'll surely be able to stand him, because he'll let you cruise along for free!

Sailing like crazy
