Towards the wind.

When a sailboat is head to wind, the side that was toward the wind, before coming head to wind, is the sailboat's windward side.

When a sailboat sails by the lee, or directly downwind, her "windward" side is the side oposite to the side on which her mainsail lies.

When two boats on the same tack overlap, the one on the windward side of the other is the windward boat.

"windward" is a preposition.
