'Abeam' or 'on the beam' is a relative bearing of 90° to the centerline of the keel or hull of the boat. (90° to port or 90° to starboard, but not on the boat.)

If something comes alongside the boat, one can say that it has come abeam.

"abeam" is a preposition meaning almost the same as:
